Saturdays for Kids
Visiting Tall Ships
Passport Program
SATURDAYS FOR KIDS
Maritime culture comes to life for youth every summer at the Santa Barbara
Maritime Museum. Young visitors are invited to participate in a medley
of maritime activities on the first and third Saturdays of the month
throughout the summer season. Saturday for Kids provides children the
opportunity to explore the local waterfront in a variety of ways ranging
from participating in sea chantey sing-a-longs and Chumash crafts to
getting ones sea legs on the Double Dolphin! During this program, children
will have a chance to learn more about their relationship to the maritime
environment, exploring the ways they can help and enjoy our rich local
resources.
See Events Calendar for date-specific
information.
VISITING TALL SHIPS
In addition to the Spirit of Dana Point Tall Ship Education Program,
the SBMM has sponsored several visits from tall ships such as the Hawaiian
Chieftain, Lady Washington and Pilgrim of Newport. The tall ships serve
as special temporary exhibits that the public can tour, experiencing
history firsthand. In addition, they offer a number of exciting hands-on
educational programs for children and adults. These replica tall ships
built over 100 years ago provide a unique and effective platform for
maritime education. The museum is working to schedule more tall ship
visits, as well as to obtain its own tall ship to be permanently berthed
in the Santa Barbara Harbor near the museum entrance.
See Events Calendar for date-specific
information.
PASSPORT PROGRAM
The museum, as a member of the Educator's Roundtable, participates in
the annual Passport Program. From November to April, Passport booklets
are available for students in grades K-8 to pick-up at the museum. The
Passport allows free admission during special Passport hours for the
student and one companion 16 years of age or older to 17 area museums
and educational sites. At each site the student completes an exciting
activity. Once complete, the student's Passport is stamped. If students
have their Passports stamped at 8 or more sites by the deadline, they
receive a special Passport T-shirt.
