Sea Festival

Location: Santa Barbara Maritime Museum & Harbor
The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is hosting the 6th Annual Sea
Festival on April 12th and 13th to celebrate and showcase the visiting
tall ship, Spirit of Dana Point. The unique ship will be moored
in Santa Barbara for the Tall Ship Overnight Education Program hosted
by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum in collaboration with the Ocean
Institute of Dana Point. To celebrate the enduring beauty of a replica
tall ship as well as the tall ship’s place in Santa Barbara
history, the SBMM will be hosting public dockside tours aboard the
tall ship during the Sea Festival weekend. The festival will include
several other exciting and dynamic maritime activities, including
ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) and hardhat diving demonstrations,
docent-guided tours of SBMM, craft activities, marine life touch
tank, local exhibitors, storytelling, and much, much more! Check
back for more details, as the event gets closer!

Winners
SBMM highlights the top nine videos from the Sundance Beach 2008
Surf Video Contest, including Grand Prize Winner Andy Hahn’s
Winter. The 16-year old Hahn captured professional surfers Tom Curren,
Kelly Slater, and Bobby Martinez tearing up the waves at Rincon
and Sandspit during some killer surf this past winter. The contest
drew over 20 entries, and were judged by Matt Kilner (with GLAS
Apparel), Matt Bovard (with O’Neill), and Jay Larson (with
RVCA clothing). Each of the videos is approximately 4-6 minutes
long and will run continuously on the Maritime Museum’s Presentation
Wall.
· 2-3 pm: Docent-guided tours of the Maritime Museum
Learn more about the Museum’s exhibits with a special focus
on the history of surfing in Santa Barbara. (Saturday tour includes
SBMM Curator discussion of the new surfing exhibit.)
· 3:30-4 pm: Storytelling for Little Surfer Girls & Boys
Enjoy tales of surf adventure that will leave young groms ready
to cry out COWABUNGA!
· 5-7:30 pm: Sunset sails aboard the Spirit of Dana Point
Tickets are $40 for adults (ages 13+) and $19 for youth (ages 5-12).

Saturday ONLY
· 10 am-4 pm: Boating Safety and Knot Tying
The Coast Guard Auxiliary presents boating basics and need-to-know
skills for hitting the high seas.
· 12-1 pm: Book Signing: Surfing: Women of the Waves by Linda
Chase
Women have had a place in surf culture since the sport began. Join
us for a book signing with author Linda Chase, whose book profiles
the history and all types of "women of the waves."
· 1-1:30 pm: Marilyn S. Tennity Surfing Exhibit Opening Celebration
Join us for the community opening and ribbon cutting for the Maritime
Museum’s newest permanent exhibit, the Marilyn S. Tennity
Surfing Exhibit. Memorabilia includes shoulder-mounted camera and
kneeboard used by George Greenough. Surfboard display includes those
used in competition by Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Kim Mearig and
Bobby Martinez.
· 1:30-2:30 pm: Book Signing: Surfer's Code by Shaun Tomson
World champion surfer Shaun Tomson will be signing copies of his
book, Surfer's Code: 12 Simple Lessons for Riding through Life,
in which he shares the life lessons he's gathered from decades of
surfing-from his boyhood adventures in South Africa to the world
tour in the late 1970s to the business world today.
· 2-2:20 pm: Surfing Exhibit Tour with SBMM Curator (Q &
A to Follow)
Join SBMM Curator, Jennifer Wisniewski for a tour of SBMM’s
newest permanent exhibit as she highlights local surfing history
and discusses the artifacts that bring this GNARLY exhibit to life.
· 3-3:30 pm: SURF Song Sing-a-long
Sing along with one of the Museum’s musician educators. There
is no better way to get into the surf groove than to sing along
to such favorites as Surfin’ Safari!
Sunday ONLY
· 11 am-4 pm: UCSB’s Marine Science Institute Mobile
REEF touch tank
Touch different species of marine plants and animals, including
sharks and their developing embryos, Giant Kelp, rockfish, lobsters,
and more!
· 1-2 pm: Musical Performance by Foggy Dew
The Irish traditions of song and storytelling are alive in Santa
Barbara with the music of the Foggy Dew Irish Band. Join us for
an afternoon of traditional Irish music and sea songs as they whisk
you back to the old country.
· 3-3:30 pm: SEA Song Sing-a-long
Sing along with one of the Museum’s musician educators. Sailors
not only sang as they worked, they often passed their few hours
of rest with song as well. Their music tells the stories about life
at sea and ashore — stories best learned by joining in a chorus.

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and the crew of the Spirit of
Dana Point invite the public to sail back in time, and around the
Santa Barbara Channel aboard the beautiful revolutionary war era
replica tall ship the Spirit of Dana Point. Hoist sail and cruise
into a piece of Santa Barbara’s rich maritime history, while
enjoying the beauty of the central coast.

Sink Faze: A freediving adventure. Freediving is the ultimate extreme
sport where failure means unconsciousness. Join in, as athletes
push their own physical and psychological limits while pursuing
the ultimate test - World and National records. Follow the rise
and fall of two world class athletes as they fight to reach their
goals. One athlete arrives sick, wondering if he can dive, while
another has a better start than they ever had before. Where they
end up may surprise you. Special appearance made by David Blaine
while training for his Drowned Alive stunt.

Buried At Sea: Just outside Halifax Harbor, munitions and explosives
dumps lay alongside torpedoes and mustard gas dumps. A mustard gas
dump within 300 Kilometers of our city! The undersea problem is
not unique to Canada. The Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Great Britain,
Ireland and Germany have reported injuries and deaths of those who
had the misfortune of coming across these relics on the sea bottom.
Buried at Sea assesses the damage and explores what, if anything,
can be done to clean-up our global mess.

The Sacred Truth: Egypt’s Blue Hole of Dahab is one of the
world’s most beautiful but dangerous dive sites. Thousands
dive its magnificent underwater archway to experience its cathedral-like
mysticism. Many divers don’t return. Filmmaker Elena Konstantinou
investigates the circumstances behind these unexplained fatalities,
drawing upon scientific rationalizations and mystical accounts inspired
by ancient Egyptian wisdom.

the waters of the United Arab Emirates.

Unnatural Selection, by Shawn Heinrichs, is a powerful film that
portrays the tragic decimation of sharks and shark populations by
humans and the shark fin industry. Beautiful images of lush tropical
marine settings are juxtaposed with the all-too-common scene below
the surface of dead sharks littering the bottom, their fins cut
off to feed an insatiable market.
A Labor of Love
