Located
at the Santa Barbara Waterfront Center, in the heart of the working harbor,
the Maritime Museum is surrounded by colorful ocean crafts, busy fishermen
and shopkeepers, and vast sea-life. Locals and visitors alike gain easy
access to the Museum by way of Cabrillo Boulevard, which runs along the
beach from Highway 101, and there's plenty of parking in the city lots
at the harbor.
DIRECTIONS
Our Museum
Once inside the Museum, visitors enjoy architectural brilliance, and a
perfect combination of high technology and warm friendliness. Rare artifacts
and priceless memorabilia tell a colorful story of Chumash settlements
on the Channel Islands, impact of Spanish ships arriving at Presidio Santa
Barbara, ensuing 19th century hide trade at Refugio and shore whaling
at Goleta Beach. The story reaches into the 20th century to explore the
hapless wreck of seven Navy destroyers on the rocks at Honda, and the
revolution in diving wrought with discovery of oil beneath the ocean floor
as demonstrated by a scale model of a channel oil rig.
RATES and AVAILABILITY
There is a
special discovery section for children, a periscope that offers panoramic
views of the harbor and beyond, a collection of ship models, a unique
display of hard hat diving equipment, and even a selection of outboard
diving motors.
Many of the Museum exhibits are mobile, and can be rolled away and stored,
enabling the Museum to become a unique special event venue. While the
display cases in the walls feature seaworthy treasures, the Museum floor
can facilitate buffet service, dining and cocktail tables and live performers.
The upstairs balcony provides a panoramic view of the room and can be
used to seat guests at small tables along the ship-style railing.
Munger
Theater
Sailing in from the back wall of the Museum is a replica of a Wilson Bros.
lumber schooner that contains a state-of-the-art multimedia theater. The
Munger Theater offers a high-tech audio-visual experience for the whole
family, with films that take the viewer on underwater adventures, tall
ships round the horn, deep sea archeological explorations and much more.
In a special event setting, the Munger Theater is an ideal space for lectures,
films and digital presentations. The setting is comfortable with either
standard rows of chairs, or with tables as a dinner-theater or lounge.
