messages of the Maritime Museum through several avenues:

Training:
You do not need any prior experience to be a Docent. Everything you
need to know will be presented in an eight-week training course (class
meets once a week) and in follow-up continuing education classes.
An adult application form and interview must be completed prior to training.
Requirements:
(1) 18 years of age or older, (2) Completion of application form and
interview, (3) Commitment to the mission and values of the Santa Barbara
Maritime Museum.
Benefits:
Docents enjoy social events, continuing education classes, a quarterly
newsletter, as well as a feeling of fulfillment knowing that they are
educating the public on Santa Barbara’s rich maritime history
and tradition.
Special
Events Volunteers
The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum hosts special events for the public
and its distinct members on a regular basis. These special events require
the help of individuals with a wide-range of interests and talents including:
Arts & Crafts, Storytelling, Ticket Takers, Musicians, Construction,
Event set-up and clean-up, and much more. This is an opportunity to work
on a flexible schedule and contribute to a worthy cause. Special event
volunteer opportunities include:
Sea Festival (April)
Summer Celebration (July)
Harbor & Seafood Festival (August)
Tall Ship Visits (year round)
Lectures & Films (year round)
and much, much more…
Special Events volunteers can start any time.
Admissions Store Volunteers
As an admission store volunteer, you have unique opportunity to interact
with the public on a regular basis, sharing your love for all things maritime.
Admissions store volunteers typically commit to volunteering on a weekly
or biweekly basis, answering visitor questions and overseeing admissions
and gift store purchases. Admission Store volunteer shifts are usually
from 10 am-1:30 pm or 1:30 – 5 pm.
Training:
A short training will be scheduled before you begin your volunteering.
This training is designed to familiarize you with the cash register procedure
and Museum collections and events.
An adult application form and interview must be completed prior to training.
Requirements:
(1) 18 years of age or older, (2) Completion of application form and interview,
(3) Commitment to the mission and values of the Santa Barbara Maritime
Museum.
Benefits:
Admission Store volunteers enjoy regular interaction with museum guests,
continuing education opportunities, as well as a feeling of fulfillment
knowing that they are educating the public on Santa Barbara’s rich
maritime history and tradition.
Admission Store volunteers can start any time.
Clerical Volunteers
If you have filing or computer skills, or just a great attitude, we can
use your help in our offices. Your weekly or monthly commitment will greatly
benefit the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. Work behind the scenes by maintaining
files and databases, assisting with mailings, photocopying, and other
office-related tasks. This is a flexible opportunity that will allow you
to work with a variety of departments.
Clerical volunteers can start any time.
Photographic
Collections Volunteers
Photographic Collections Volunteers help to provide basic conservation
care, cataloguing, identification, and categorizing of photographic
collections. Working in direct contact with the Curator & Collections
Manager, the volunteer will gain a unique insight into collections management
& exhibit development.
Responsibilities:
Conservation care: storing each photograph and negative in archival
storage materials to protect against unnecessary deterioration or damage
due to a variety of environmental factors, improper storage techniques,
improper handling, etc. Light conservation work may be needed on a case-by-case
basis.
Cataloguing: each photograph and negative will receive its own specially-assigned
number to facilitate accessioning procedures and databasing.
Identification/categorization: each photograph and negative will be
identified according to gift donor, accessioning number, and subject
area and then categorized as such. Reproduction rights for each photo/negative
will also need to be identified and specified for future museum/exhibit
use.
Possibility for work in other Curatorial subjects as well (can be discussed)
Training:
All necessary training in photographic collection care, procedures,
handling techniques, etc. will be provided at beginning of volunteer/intern
work.
Qualifications:
Highly detail-oriented
Neat and legible handwriting
Ability to work independently
Ability to type
Ability to lift 25-50 lbs
Interest in museum work, maritime history, Santa Barbara local history,
etc.; background in History, Art History, Anthropology, Photography,
Education, Museum Studies, or other related field
Time Commitment:
Any time that can be given is helpful, though a routine schedule is
much preferred
Hours preferred: between 3-10 hours per week (For Fall 2006, 9 AM –
12 Noon M-F, some Saturdays and possibly some afternoons)
Preferably long-term work needed due to training involved, but short-term
is open for discussion on a case-by-case basis
Photographic Collections volunteers can start any time.
Outdoor Santa Barbara Visitor Center Volunteers
As an Outdoor Santa Barbara Visitor Center volunteer, you have unique
opportunity to interact with the public on a regular basis, educating
visitors about the missions of each of the center’s partners (CINMS,
National Parks Service, Forestry & SBMM). OSBVC volunteers typically
commit to volunteering on a weekly or biweekly basis, answering visitor
questions and sharing with the public the OSBVC’s amazing view.
Admission Store volunteer shifts are usually from 10 am-1:30 pm or 1:30
– 5 pm.
Training:
A short training will be scheduled before you begin your volunteering.
This training is designed to familiarize you with visitor center procedures
and the partner’s missions and offerings.
An adult application form and interview must be completed prior to training.
Requirements:
(1) 18 years of age or older, (2) Completion of application form and
interview, (3) Commitment to the mission and values of the Santa Barbara
Maritime Museum.
Benefits:
Outdoor Santa Barbara Visitor Center volunteers enjoy regular interaction
with visitors from all over the world, continuing education opportunities
& field trips, a free adventure pass for Los Padres National Forest
(after 100 hours) as well as a feeling of fulfillment knowing that they
are educating the public on Santa Barbara’s rich maritime history
and tradition.
Outdoor Santa Barbara Visitor Center volunteers can start any time.
Ranger Crew & Sea Mew
Too!
Become a member of the Ranger Crew. Sail the Sea Mew. With 2 unique
floating exhibits in the Maritime Museum’s collection, we need
your help to bring these vessels to life, educating the public on their
histories, taking them out for a spin, restoring their structures. We
need boaters to keep the boats afloat.
Ranger & Nidever Sea Mew volunteers can start any time.
