CALLING ALL ARTISTS IN GRADES K-6!

There’s Still Time for children in Grades K-6 to Send Us Ocean-Related Art for a Unique Immersive Experience at Santa Barbara Maritime Museum

Santa Barbara, CA. January 31, 2021 – To kick off its next major exhibit, Whales Are Superheroes! the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is holding an immersive ocean adventure featuring artwork submitted by kids in grades K-6. Kids are invited to submit their interpretation of a whale, a whale’s activities, and/or anything ocean-related, such as kelp, starfish, dolphins, and other sea creatures…and there is still time to send in their drawings!  Artwork, which must be done on 8½” x 11” white paper, using only crayons, colored pencils, and/or markers, can now be submitted up until February 28, 2022, and still be included in the show. This interactive and immersive event, “A Whale of a Tale,” will feature audio and video components that bring the kids’ artwork to life and will be on display from April 15-May 15, 2022.

The “A Whale of a Tale” experience and a kids’ art exhibit are part of the multi-faceted exhibit, Whales Are Superheroes! which will explore the effect whales have on the ocean, climate and climate change, and air quality. As part of this effort, SBMM will have a student art exhibit; the Whale of a Tale” three-dimensional art and sound experience based on kids’ art; The Wonder of Whales: Two Artists’ Perspectives, an ocean-themed exhibit of artwork by Kelly Clause and John Baran; a lecture by Holly Lohuis about how whales affect the climate and about Santa Barbara’s application to be designated an international Whale Heritage Site; and a new permanent exhibit on whales and climate change.

But first and foremost, the museum needs kid’s drawings! Watch our “Whale of a Tale” video at https://vimeo.com/661045048 for inspiration. Then go to sbmm.org for further information about how to format and submit kids’ artwork. Once the art has been submitted, each family will receive a complimentary family pass to the museum.

Maybe there's a happy little waterfall happening over here. A little happy sunlight shining through there. Take your time. Speed will come later. God gave you this gift of imagination. Use it. Once you learn the technique, ohhh! Turn you loose on the world; you become a tiger. Work on one thing at a time.
