In this compelling lecture, Dr. Keffer will delve into the storied past of the Western Flyer, the iconic fishing boat that carried John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts on their groundbreaking 1940 Gulf of California expedition. Chronicled in Steinbeck’s Sea of Cortez, the journey became a landmark moment blending science, art, and ecological awareness. “The Western Flyer is more than a boat; it’s a symbol of interdisciplinary discovery and the enduring connection between humanity and nature,” Dr. Keffer explains.

“The Western Flyer is a testament to how a single vessel can influence both maritime history and environmental thought. We are honored to host Dr. Keffer as he brings this incredible story to life for our community,” said SBMM Executive Director Greg Gorga.

The vessel’s legacy as “the most famous fishing boat in the world” took a dramatic turn as it fell into decay, sinking twice and narrowly escaping demolition. Thanks to the Western Flyer Foundation, the ship has been meticulously restored, and her story now inspires new generations. “Restoring the Western Flyer isn’t just about preserving history; it’s about reigniting the spark of curiosity and exploration,” Dr. Keffer adds.

“The restoration of the Western Flyer is a remarkable achievement that aligns with our mission to preserve and celebrate maritime heritage,” said SBMM Education Coordinator Jason Statucki. “Dr. Keffer’s presentation will inspire everyone to reflect on the connections between history, science, and our shared future.”
