The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is thrilled to host the iconic Western Flyer at the Santa Barbara Harbor. Famous for John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts’ 1940 Sea of Cortez expedition, the restored vessel now serves as a research and education platform.
Visitors can enjoy a rare, docent-led onboard experience at the harbor on March 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Free.
They are also welcome to attend Dr. Tom Keffer’s lecture on the Western Flyer’s history, restoration, and future on Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. A pre-lecture members-only reception will take place from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Admission is free for SBMM Navigators Circle members, $10 for other members, and $20 for the general public. Once decayed and nearly lost, the vessel has been meticulously restored by the Western Flyer Foundation, inspiring new generations to explore the connections between history, science, and ocean conservation.
