Santa Barbara Channel Island Fox

Available for Inter-Museum Loan

The recovery of the tiny island fox is the swiftest of a terrestrial mammal
in the history of the Endangered Species Act and is a prime example of
conservation working in wild places. The restoration of habitat across
the Channel Islands National Park on a whole represents several entities
coming together to ensure this unique island ecosystem has returned to a
natural balance.

The conservation effort to save the Santa Cruz Island foxes was crucial
because they are a keystone species, vital to the island’s ecosystem, and
their decline threatened the entire island’s delicate balance and native
plant and animal communities.

The collection features more than 50 stunning photographs of island
foxes, captured during Chuck Graham’s kayaking adventures across the
Santa Barbara Channel to Santa Cruz Island. The exhibition highlights the natural balance that was restored on the island.

Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM), which is located in the Waterfront Center Building (formerly the Naval Reserve Building) opened its doors to the public in July 2000, with the unique mission to interpret the rich and diverse maritime history of the Santa Barbara Channel. SBMM is an interactive museum - a place where the public can experience maritime culture without leaving the harbor.

Founded by a group of fishermen, divers, and sailors, the SBMM provides hands-on learning opportunities for all ages, delving into Santa Barbara’s robust maritime history while highlighting the important role the Santa Barbara Channel plays in our culture and community.

From the engaging exhibitions, visitors leave with a love for and better understanding of the Santa Barbara Channel – its abundant marine life, the multiple recreational activities it provides, and the people making a living on its waters.
