Ranger: Anchored in History
SBMM’s flagship Ranger is a true maritime treasure—the oldest boat in Santa Barbara Harbor and the first private big-game fishing yacht built on the West Coast. Launched in 1917 and once the flagship of the Catalina Island Tuna Club, Ranger hosted legendary anglers like Zane Grey, Humphrey Bogart, and John Wayne, landing record-setting tuna and swordfish.
Lovingly restored and donated by Jack Morehart, Ranger became SBMM’s first major exhibit and remains a centerpiece of our collection. Her rich teakwood construction, original features, and enduring seaworthiness make her a living link to our ocean heritage.
