As innovations in marine conservation continue to unfold across maritime America, the Santa Barbara Channel region remains at the forefront, shaping advancements in coastal resource management. From sustainable seafood practices to the preservation of Point Conception’s historic working ranch and the evolving landscape of coastal energy development, Santa Barbara serves as a model of innovation. Helms’ presentation will explore how the unique character of this region drives attention and leadership in global conservation efforts.
Santa Barbara resident Greg Helms brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion. As manager of Ocean Conservancy’s Fish Conservation Program, he has worked to advance sustainable nearshore fisheries, marine protected areas, and ocean wildlife conservation. His involvement with organizations like Gaviota Coast Conservancy and the Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary has provided him with deep insight into both marine and terrestrial conservation efforts in the area.
“The drive to sustain and protect the coast and ocean along the shore of the Santa Barbara Channel is a core part of our community identity. Building on past and present efforts to protect our sea and landscapes, we steam confidently to a sustainable future,” said Helms.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the conservation successes and challenges in the region, learning how these efforts continue to shape maritime practices worldwide. The presentation will also examine the implications of these trends for the future, offering a look ahead at emerging opportunities and challenges in ocean and coastal conservation.
Most individuals attending the lecture will be able to find seats on the main floor. When overflow seating becomes necessary due to larger than normal attendance, guests are invited to view the lecture from the museum’s Munger Theater. All lecture seating is first come, first served. SBMM members are invited to enjoy a pre-lecture reception from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., which provides early access to the event. Learn more about becoming a member.
