Acclaimed Author Robin Lloyd Presents Hidden Cargo
October 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
SBMM is pleased to present the October offering of its Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series with a special event featuring Robin Lloyd, the acclaimed author of the newly released historical novel Hidden Cargo. Join us on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. for a captivating evening where Lloyd will discuss the inspiration behind his latest work, followed by a book signing.
Hidden Cargo is a suspenseful mystery set in the turbulent months following the Civil War, focusing on a shadowy, often overlooked chapter in American history. In the fall of 1865, reports began to surface that freedmen from Florida and Louisiana were being kidnapped and re-enslaved on sugar plantations in Cuba. Lloyd’s novel follows Navy Lieutenant Everett Townsend, who is sent from Key West to Cuba, on a secret mission to uncover the truth behind these disturbing reports. Through Townsend’s eyes, readers are plunged into the complex, tension-filled world of post-war Cuba, where American, Cuban, and Spanish interests collide.
Robin Lloyd masterfully weaves historical fact with fiction, crafting a tale that is as informative as it is gripping. The novel has received widespread acclaim, with the Historical Novels Society praising Lloyd’s pacing as “pitch-perfect,” and calling Hidden Cargo a “thrilling read for salts of all ages.” Feathered Quill describes it as “a page-turning ‘must-read’ that contains an adventurous blend of mystery, betrayal, and intrigue!” Quarterdeck Magazine hails it as “a compelling story about the challenges of family and career, loyalty against feelings of love and conscience.”
“Robin Lloyd’s work offers a unique blend of historical accuracy, rich narrative, and deep emotional resonance,” said SBMM Executive Director Greg Gorga. “We are thrilled to have him back to share his experiences and his passion for storytelling with our community.”
In addition to his journalism career, Lloyd’s early life on the island of St. Croix, where he grew up sailing and working on his family’s dairy farm, profoundly influenced his connection to the sea—a theme that permeates his literary work. A graduate of Princeton University and Columbia University’s School of Journalism, Lloyd’s academic background and worldly experiences have contributed to the depth and authenticity of his writing.
SBMM invites all history buffs, literature lovers, and maritime enthusiasts to attend this special event. Tickets are available now, with proceeds supporting the museum’s exhibitions and educational programs.
Lecture guests will also be able to view SBMM’s latest exhibition, Majestic California Piers, featuring 31 photographs showcasing iconic piers throughout California (spanning from San Simeon to Oceanside). The piers are seen through the lenses of acclaimed photographers Bill Dewey and Dan Merkel, whose breathtaking aerial views and intimate details provide unique vantage points of these coastal landmarks. The show will be on view until January 19, 2025.
Most individuals attending the lecture will be able to find seats on the main floor. When overflow seating becomes necessary due to larger than normal attendance, guests are invited to view the lecture from the museum’s Munger Theater. All lecture seating is first come, first served. SBMM members are invited to enjoy a pre-lecture reception from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., which provides early access to the event. Learn more about becoming a member.
