The goal of the Alternative Uses of the Oil Platforms Expo is to inform and educate the public about the different options available for creating alternative uses for the Santa Barbara Channel oil platforms as many of them head towards decommissioning.

Vendors, including the following private enterprises and nonprofit organizations, will be presenting their ideas at tables throughout the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) and via 15-minute presentations inside our Munger Theater:

● Bardex ● Blue Latitudes
● BOEM-Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Pacific Region ● Marine Megatropolis
● HUBBS Seaworld Research Institute ● OceanForesters
  • Pacific Ocean Energy Trust

oil platformProposals may range from converting them into marine life reefs or protected areas, renewable energy sources such as wind or wave power, and fishing reefs to desalination plants or aquaculture facilities. There will also be a keynote speaker (to be announced) at 4:00pm on the Museum’s main floor to close out the Expo. Vendor fees are $50 for nonprofit organizations and $100 for private enterprises.

SBMM believes an open discussion of ideas is important for our community as we move towards the next phase of the Santa Barbara Channel oil platforms. This Expo will give the public the opportunity to be heard and

to have input in the decision-making process.
