Fun at SBMM! Let Your Curiosity Set Sail at the Maritime Museum

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) offers a variety of summertime activities designed to provide fun and educational experiences for visitors of all ages. From engaging exhibits to special events, SBMM is the perfect destination for families, history buffs, and maritime enthusiasts alike.

“We offer exceptional opportunities for individuals, families and kids of all ages,” said SBMM Deputy Director Jessica Tade. “Our interactive exhibits and hands-on activities enhance the museum experience as visitors learn about our local maritime history as well as our deep connections to the sea.” When you walk through the doors of the museum, you embark on a journey of discovery. Visitors can explore exhibitions such as the Point Conception Lighthouse First Order Fresnel Lens; Dwight Brooks ship models; Whales Are Superheroes!; deep sea commercial diving; the Santa Barbara Channel Islands; Daughters and Wives: Keepers of the Light; and more. They can navigate the Santa Barbara Channel through SBMM’s Jack Tarr boating game or battle a big fish through the interactive Sport Fishing exhibit. Youth can learn more about different species of fish in the children’s gallery kelp forest or complete a fun and unique art project, among other fun activities.

Throughout the summer and beyond, SBMM will be offering a variety of rotating art shows. Coastal Moments is currently on view, and is a presentation of 10 local plein air artists and their works, which incorporate coastal landscapes and ocean themes. Featured artists include Ann Shelton Beth, Nancy Davidson, Camile Dellar, Rick Garcia, Derek Harrison, Wyllis Heaton, Ray Hunter, Ann Sanders, Thomas Van Stein, and Ralph Watherhouse. The show will be on view until August 18, 2024.

Join SBMM for Majestic California Piers, an exhibition showcasing a stunning selection of photographs by acclaimed photographers Bill Dewey and Dan Merkel, on view from September 5, 2024, through January 19, 2025. Alternatively, explore the remarkable conservation success story of the Channel Island Fox in Chuck Graham’s photography exhibition, Island Foxes: The Swiftest Recovery, on view from May 22, 2025, through August 31, 2025.

“I bring my 4 year old granddaughter to the museum often. We enjoy building memories together exploring the exhibits and playing in the kids gallery.” said SBMM curator Emily Falke.

Maybe there's a happy little waterfall happening over here. A little happy sunlight shining through there. Take your time. Speed will come later. God gave you this gift of imagination. Use it. Once you learn the technique, ohhh! Turn you loose on the world; you become a tiger. Work on one thing at a time.
